Dummy school system 101
"What are dummy schools?" for those who don't know it yet —
Dummy school(or non attending school) is unauthorised schooling in which school lets the student to be absentee in the school for whole session but conducts the exam of affiliated board, which is a malpractice in CBSE's judgement (since 75% attendance criterion of CBSE). Where do students study then? Coachings or any other convenience of their choice.
It is being persued by lot of students, as some kind of rising culture or trend, who are starting in high school or intermediate school.
This blog is about its causes and consequences.
Why dummy schools?
Students go into dummy schools because they see some relevant features in dummy schools that regular schools don't provide.
The main reason, mostly — competitive exams
Most of the students who opt for these schools have these reasons : lack of good teaching staff in their school, lack of time, facility of competitive exam oriented teaching in these schools, social influence etc.
Universities and colleges require a higher standard of qualification than the one that is taught in regular schools. And even if there are other career options, students that truly want to get into these colleges or universities for their respective subjects face problem. Therefore, promoting other career options will not be a direct arrow to the problem.
In the current state of competition in these exams, having a good education is very necessary to qualify in these exams.
Post-covid "rationalisation"(shortening) of syllabus has also added to the problem. Also, the rising availability of study materials on the internet has been a cherry on top of this.
Why not?
Isolation, physical and mental health problems, pressurising environment, restricted personality development are faced by students who opt for dummy schools(non attending school) most commonly.
Dummy schools are ideally not good for a student's overall education and mental or physical health but it still stands with regular school for their shortcomings.
CBSE takes action against dummy schools.
CBSE disaffiliated 20 of such schools on 22nd March, 2024 since the features of dummy schools do not abide by the bye-laws of CBSE.
Hybrid of regular and dummy schools (Tie-ups)
Many schools do tie-up with coaching centres that provide teachers who orientate to competitive exams. In this way, they fulfill both the requirements of entrance test preparation and usual schooling.
What then?
The idea of dummy school is, indeed, problematic and an issue that needs to be stated more. Improving our education system, availability of schools and qualified teachers in the schools is the answer to it, as it is the cause in the first place. Regular schools should support students with their needs who opt for appearing into these exams of higher standard. Parents and students should be defying towards conformity with societal norms of career selection.
Freshmen in high schools and intermediate schools who choose dummy school have reasons for their selection regardless of the fact that dummy schools don't make a healthy education system. The key to solve the issue is in schools itself.
